This sampler is an original design based on the layout of eighteenth century Irish Quaker samplers with the lettering and sampler motifs taken from a Mountmellick Irish Quaker sampler in the collection of Cross Stitch Antiques, Elizabeth Martin circa 1789. The town names at the bottom are the ancestral homes of the designer's four Irish grandparents.
 
The first alphabets on samplers in Ireland seem to appear in the early seventeenth century and were probably a school exercise. Simple lettering skills were practiced with a view to the neat marking of laundry. In a large household or institution, it was important for each person's clothes to be marked with their name so that the laundry could be returned to the right people. Small girls learned to stitch the alphabet at a very early age. Alphabet stitching as a means of recording letters for marking linen was its most common use, but not the only purpose. Plain Quakers didn't embrace religious images on their samplers and focused on alphabets and texts. Literacy was very important for Protestants, and religious pieces of a suitably uplifting nature were often worked.

Terms & Conditions for Preorders and Special Order items-

  • Patterns generally arrive within a month of their release (Market and Expo times can cause variation). New releases can be about a month while existing releases may only take a few days as they are simply being restocked.
  • Fabric will be dyed to order and time varies between the Dyers. Generally between 4-12 weeks.
  • Threads generally arrive within a few days to a month.
  • Should you want to cancel any items within your order, you will only be refunded in store credit less a restocking fee. 
  • If I cannot fulfill your order due to supply issues or discontinuance, I will refund your original payment method and contact you for alternatives. 

Preorder & Special order items are NOT IN STOCK and will ship within 2 business days of arrival. If you order these items and other in stock items, your entire order will ship when your FULL ORDER is in stock. Please contact me if you need items from your order sooner, we can work on it together. 

Cancellations

Refunds for cancelling any item with Preorder in the title, will be issued as a Store Credit less a 30% restocking fee. All cancellations are refunded in Store Credit only.

Postage & Handling is not refundable as it is a service that is not refundable once a shipment is mailed and accepted by the carrier
